Link Building

Link Building is the task of building high quality backlinks from other people’s sites to yours.

It can involve posting on other websites (eg blogs, forums, link partnerships, news, ) or to directories (article, blog, video, PR).

Ideally, backlinks come not only from your own efforts to ‘get out there’ and talk about your product / service / opinion and link back to your site, but also through other people finding your site useful and deciding to link to it from theirs.

Why Does It Matter?

Getting links to your page is one of the ways to give your page or website ‘credibility’ and ‘relevance’ in the eyes of the search engines.  This is because the search engine is trying to present to the searcher the site which contains the most relevant information.  The way they make this judgement is via looking at the page/s on the site and also who else links to that site.

If a website that is well established and well known in its area links to your site, you, in effect, get a little of their credibility.  The thinking goes – if website A thinks that that website B contains relevant information, then maybe the search engine should check it out too!

How Do You Do It?

In its simplist forms, you want to go out and find websites that use the same keywords as you and / or are in the same niche and post on their site with a link back to yours.

Like all things in internet marketing, nothing is as simple as it seems and the tasks of both generating backlinks and getting the links from the ‘right’ places is quite enormous.

One word of warning – Search Engines are wise to blatant ‘link building campaigns’ so using automated tools that makes claims of getting your massive rankings (literally) overnight should be treated with some scepticism.  All your efforts will be for naught if you ‘appear’ out of nowhere – you may find that the algorithim changes and you disappear from sight just as quickly!
